As locals who were born and raised in the Levi area, we know both sides well. Here is our advice on choosing where to stay and why you should make time to explore beyond Levi village, wherever you decide to sleep.
Where is the best area to stay in Levi?
For most first-time visitors, Levi village is the most convenient area to stay.
The ski slopes, restaurants, cafés, shops, rental services and many activities are concentrated around the centre. Staying here means you can walk to most places and enjoy your holiday without constantly thinking about transportation.
This makes Levi village particularly convenient for families, first-time visitors and anyone who wants everything close by.
There are also accommodation options outside the centre for travellers looking for more space, privacy and nature. These can be a great choice if you have a rental car or simply prefer peaceful surroundings over having restaurants and services on your doorstep.
But there is something important to understand when choosing your accommodation in Levi:
Levi village and the wilderness surrounding it can feel like two completely different worlds.

Drive away from Levi village and the scenery quickly begins to change.
The roads become quieter. Houses become fewer. The forests grow deeper, the skies darker and nature begins to take over.
This is the Lapland many visitors have travelled north to experience.
You do not necessarily need to choose between the two. In fact, for many travellers, the best option is to combine them.
Stay in Levi village if you value convenience, restaurants, skiing and easy access to services but make sure you spend some of your holiday exploring beyond the resort.
That is where many of the hidden gems are waiting.
How far should you travel from Levi?
To see the Northern Lights, four things need to come together:
You do not have to travel for hours to experience a completely different side of Lapland.
At Soma Adventures, our experiences take you approximately 36 kilometres north of Levi village, to our family’s peaceful wilderness cabin and private lakeside camp. The journey takes less than 40 minutes, yet the surroundings feel worlds away from the busy resort.
Here, there are no ski lifts or busy streets.
Instead, you can walk through silent forests on snowshoes, try ice fishing on a frozen lake, gather around an open fire, enjoy homemade food and listen to stories from guides who have spent their lives in this part of Lapland.
Depending on the experience, you can also visit a traditional local reindeer farm and discover more about life in the north.
This is not a separate attraction built for visitors. It is the landscape we grew up with and still call home.

If you want restaurants, ski slopes, nightlife and services within walking distance, choose accommodation in or close to Levi village.
If privacy, nature and peaceful surroundings are more important, look at accommodation outside the centre – particularly if you have access to a car.
But wherever you decide to stay, our biggest recommendation is the same:
Don’t spend your entire holiday in Levi village.
The resort is a fantastic base for a Lapland holiday, but some of the most memorable experiences begin when you leave the lights and crowds behind.
Travel a little further. Follow the smaller roads. Step into the forest. Sit beside a fire. Look up at a truly dark Arctic sky.
That’s where you’ll discover another side of Levi.
