How Cold Does It Get in Levi?
The short answer? Sometimes very cold – but don’t let that scare you.
Winter temperatures in Levi typically range from around -5°C to -20°C (23°F to -4°F). During colder periods, especially in January and February, temperatures can occasionally fall below -30°C (-22°F). At other times, winter days can be surprisingly mild, with temperatures close to 0°C (32°F).
If you’re wondering how cold Levi is, what winter in Finnish Lapland actually feels like, or whether it’s too cold for outdoor activities, there’s one important thing to know: the right clothing makes all the difference.
Is Levi too cold for outdoor activities?
Many of our guests arrive expecting the Arctic cold to be difficult. After their holiday, they often tell us the same thing: it wasn’t nearly as cold as we expected.
In Lapland, we dress in layers. Warm base layers, wool, insulated boots, mittens and a good hat can keep you comfortable outdoors even when temperatures drop well below freezing.
The cold also creates some of the most memorable moments of a winter holiday. On particularly frosty days, your breath turns into clouds, eyelashes may freeze white and the landscape becomes covered in sparkling frost.
It’s all part of experiencing a real Arctic winter.

What should you wear in Levi in winter?
Good winter clothing is essential, but you don’t need to worry about figuring everything out on your own.
Our guides were born and raised in the Levi area and know how to dress for changing Arctic conditions. We’re always happy to advise you on what to wear in Levi, what to pack and how to stay warm outdoors.
At Soma Adventures, we also provide our guests with an extra-long thermal winter jacket to wear over their own outdoor clothing.
And when we arrive at our wilderness cabin, you can borrow a pair of authentic hand-knitted Finnish wool socks – a small local touch that makes a surprisingly big difference on a cold winter day.
With the right clothing, you can stop thinking about the temperature and focus on enjoying Lapland.
What can you do in Levi when it’s cold?
Cold weather doesn’t mean staying indoors. Winter activities in Levi continue throughout the season, with conditions and safety always taken into account.
You can head out in search of the Northern Lights, visit a traditional reindeer farm, explore snowy forests on snowshoes, try ice fishing, or simply sit around a fire in the wilderness with something warm to drink.
In fact, some of the coldest days can also be among the most beautiful. Clear skies, sparkling snow and heavily frosted trees can transform the landscape into exactly the kind of Arctic scenery many visitors have travelled to Lapland to experience.

Warm up the Finnish way
And after spending time outdoors, there’s perhaps no better way to warm up than a traditional Finnish sauna.
For an especially memorable evening, Soma Adventures offers a private Finnish sauna experience by a frozen lake. Water is carried from the lake for the sauna, and those feeling brave can even try a dip through a hole in the ice.
Afterwards, relax in our cosy lakeside log cabin while your private chef prepares a three-course dinner – combining Finnish traditions, local food and the peaceful atmosphere of Lapland.
Don’t be afraid of the Arctic winter
So, how cold is Levi?
Yes, it can be very cold. But that’s also part of what makes winter in Finnish Lapland so special.
With warm clothing, local knowledge and the right preparation, you can comfortably enjoy the outdoors and experience Lapland as it’s meant to be experienced.
Some of the best memories aren’t made by staying warm indoors.
They’re made by stepping outside into a real Arctic winter.
